Mental Performance Training
What is mental performance training?
Mental performance training is a component of sport psychology where we assess, measure, practice, and implement different mental performance skills, whether it be honing in on an athlete’s already present strengths, or focusing on areas of growth.
What are mental performance skills?
Mental performance skills, or psychological skills, are different skills, tools, and techniques that your brain uses, whether you recognize it or not, to either hurt or enhance performance. Examples of different mental performance skills that mental performance training can target include confidence, focus/attention, emotion regulation, fear management, goal setting, motivation, mind-body connection, mindfulness, consistency, performance anxiety, handling pressure, stress management, teamwork, communication, leadership, and so much more.
What do mental performance training sessions look like?
We always start with an initial consultation, where I get to know you as much as possible and we come up with a gameplan for what our work together is going to look like. Every athlete is different - with some athletes, we make a very structured plan where each session we discuss a different topic, while with other athletes, we use more of a therapy based approach where we process present issues or things happening in your life.
Do I need to be “struggling” with anything to benefit from mental performance training?
NO! While we can target areas of growth, mental performance training can also be that extra push that helps turn a good athlete to a great athlete. If you feel like you’ve put the time and effort into physical preparation and feel good about where you’re at, mental performance training can be hugely beneficial to take you to that next step.
